SPECIALIST GROUPS IN THE SOCIETY

The Society has formed a range of specialist sections and groups during the last 30 years or so. The Hertfordshire Geological Society, formed in the late 1960's, is now a separate (but affiliated) organisation. In the early 1970's, the Herts Bird Club was formed. This remains a group within the Society, but runs its own affairs, and has its own website (www.hertsbirdclub.org.uk). In the early 1990's, the Mammal Group was established, also with its own administrative arrangement. More recently, specialist groups for dragonflies, moths, fungi and flora have also come into being, most operating as informal groups within the society. The Society also works closely with the Hertfordshire and Middlesex Butterfly Conservation branch, whose activities are run jointly with the Society under the joint Butterfly Recorder.

These groups are a focal point for most of the natural history study carried out in the County, and are the mainstay of the Society's activities. They also serve as a source of the manpower which carries out surveys for various national recording schemes.
