We are sad to learn that Mrs Enid Evans, one of the longest serving members of the Society, died peacefully at a care home on 7 October 2009, aged 98.
Her funeral will be at 2.00 on Wednesday 28 October at Jordans Quaker Meeting House, Welders Lane, Jordans, Bucks, HP9 2SN.
Enid and her husband Percy were both qualified geologists and joined the Society in 1941. They both contributed an enormous amount to the study of natural history in the county and organisation of the Society. Enid was very active in the Society, she was HNHS Librarian from 1950-55, Editor of the Transactions from 1960-61, Vice President 12 times between 1957 and 1982 and President of the Society in 1962 and 1963 an outstanding record. She was awarded Honorary Life membership of the Society.
Enid and Percy started work on a book on the Geology of Hertfordshire in the early 1950s, unfortunately they were unable to complete the task before Percy's death in December 1974. This work has subsequently been taken forward by John Catt and is nearing completion. Hertfordshire Natural History Society is in discussion with Hertfordshire Geology Society with a view to publication.
