An outstanding Hertfordshire naturalist

John was a central figure in natural history and nature conservation in the Bishop’s Stortford area for well over 50 years. He was the principal field botanist supplying Dr John Dony with records from the east of the county for the Flora of Hertfordshire compiled between 1955 and 1965. He almost single-handedly was responsible for the coverage of much of this area. He was a mainstay of the Bishop’s Stortford Natural History Society and was instrumental in the establishment of Sawbridgeworth Marsh Nature Reserve and getting recognition for Patmore Heath. Sadly John died on 19 September 2009. His daughter, Pat accepted the Award on behalf of her late father.
