PROJECTS FOR ALL
The primary objective of the Society is the study and recording of all aspects of natural history within Hertfordshire. This requires a certain level of expertise in the identification of the appropriate species group to ensure that an authoratative data base of information is maintained. In addition, all records will be reviewed by the relevant County Recorder for validation purposes.
However, there are studies in progress for which no specialist knowledge is required and in which everyone can participate and make a significant contribution.
The Phenogical Study, although grandly named, is no more than the recording of "first dates" to monitor climate change. So if you can recognise a bluebell or the call of a cuckoo, then you can provide a valuable contribution to this survey.
Similarly, if you can tell the difference between a frog, a toad and a newt ( if not, all the basic natural history books will tell you ) then you could participate in the Amphibian Study, run in partnership with the Hertfordshire Biological Records Centre.
So you can see that you do not have to be an expert to enjoy the natural history of Hertfordshire and contribute to some of the wildlife studies that are currently in progress.
