EDITORIAL
It has been a very busy year in the history of the Society. Following its formation at the Council Meeting on 28th November 2001, the Focus Group held five meetings and has recommended that the Society should:
- retain Charitable Status
- introduce a more stream-lined management structure
- prepare a new Constitution
The new Constitution was necessary to meet the requirements of the new Charity Commission model, but also provided the opportunity to make the Constitution less prescriptive and to introduce the new management structure, both necessary to take the Society forward into the 21st century.
A Special General Meeting (SGM) was held on the 9th October 2002 to present the proposed Constitution to the membership and to vote on its adoption. After a presentation and discussion, the new Constitution was adopted. The SGM was followed immediately by a second meeting, to elect the members of the new Management Committee (see later).
However, in parallel with the Focus Group activities, the Society has also started to put in place new initiatives. The publications have been put back on track with the production in the Spring of the Herts
Naturalist and the Herts Bird Report, the mainstays of our Society. This has been supplemented by the new-look newsletter, Field Notes, of which this is the second issue. Field Notes is intended to be a member's magazine, not a scientific journal, and, therefore, I would hope that some of you out there would like to contribute articles.
However, I am sure that the most significant milestone this year is the launch of the HNHS website. The site contains just about everything you want to know about the Society, and will hopefully be updated at regular intervals to keep it topical. See later for more information.
I now convinced that the Society has a firm foundation on which both the Management Committee and the entire membership can build for the future. Don't forget that you do not have to be on the Management Committee to contribute to the success of the Society. So if any of you have any particular skills, and enthusiasm is regarded as a valuable skill, please let me know.
