EDITORIAL

October 9th 2002 represented a major milestone in the history of the Society with the approval of the new Constitution. Since then, the new Management Committee has met twice to consider the remaining issues and to agree the way forward. The major issues under the spotlight are the Society's finances and membership.

Although the Society is not poor by any means, the current expenditure is out-stripping income by a factor of 2:1. It has therefore been necessary to carry out a thorough review of our annual outgoings, to consider a wide range of alternative options for getting expenditure under control, and the subscription levels that are required to sustain the various options. A new formula has been agreed by the Management Committee and will be presented to the membership for ratification at the AGM on the 29th March 2003.

The decline in membership has not only been halted, but has recently shown a slight increase. It is hoped that the formation of a new Publicity and Publications sub-committee under the chairmanship of Michael Clark will not only maintain our current membership levels, but show a steady increase over the next few years.

I now feel confident that the Society is in a strong position to achieve its objectives, and will continue to fulfil its role in the recording and conservation of wildlife in the county.
