APRIL - Calendar of meetings and events organised by local natural history groups for April 2010

 Compiled by the Hertfordshire Natural History Society (HNHS) on behalf of natural history organisations in Hertfordshire.

Visitors (non-members) are welcome at all the meetings listed; the notes indicate where a charge or donation is requested.

For field meetings please wear appropriate outdoor clothing and shoes, take field guides and binoculars if you have them.

HNHS cannot accept any responsibility for details of other organisations’ meetings included in this list and you may wish to contact the relevant organisation beforehand in case of any last minute changes.

A Date with Nature - Heron watch - in Verulamium Park  
Hot news - the Herons now have chicks - The viewpoint is opposite the lake's largest island in Verulamium Park, St Albans you get good views of the Herons on their massive nests on the island. Volunteers armed with exciting facts about the birds are on hand  to help visitors of all ages use telescopes and binoculars to get a great view into the massive nests. Props and hands-on demonstration materials have proved a hit with younger visitors, helping them to find out more about these surprising birds. Tuesday 13 April:
Letchworth Natural History Society ‘Tenerife - the jewel of the Canary Islands’

Thursday 15th April, 11am-3pm
Spin into Spring at College Lake Nature Reserve.
 
Family fun at Easter! Spinning and knitting demonstrations - meet the College Lake sheep - see an original Shepherd’s Hut - lots of other things to see and do. Refreshments available in the Barn. Admission free (donations welcome) – come and go as you like; No dogs please.

Dawn Chorus in Sherrardsparkwood, Welwyn Garden City

Meet at 5.00am at Rectory Road car park, for two hour experience of bird song in springtime. Leader Ken Smith, Wood Warden and Chair of Herts Bird Club. Wear warm clothes it is cold and dark at 5.00am. Coffee and buns served afterwards Cost £3 each.  Learn about….. Woodland Wild Flower Identification

Saturday 24th April 2010, 10am – 4pm 
Venue: Brickendon Village Hall and Great Groves Wood 
A workshop session on the origins and structure of woodlands, woodland survey methods and practical identification will be followed by a visit to a local woodland to put your new skills into practice. Tutor: Neale Holmes-Smith, cost only £30 for the whole day. Full details here
