HNHS members and others can learn more about practical action to protect insects by supporting the 'No insectinction' campaign launched by the Buglife charity.
Insects make up half the species on Earth, but the loss of insect life is faster than for higher profile groups such as mammals and birds whose own survival may depend on them. According to Buglife, international research studies suggest as many four in ten species could face extinction in coming decades as indiscriminate use of insecticides, climate change and other man-made threats undermine the planet's ecological balance. The campaign is seeking
- Room for insects to thrive – making more space for wildlife and reconnecting the wild parts of our landscapes
- Safe spaces for insects – freeing our land and freshwaters from pollutants and invasive species
- A friendlier relationship with insects – raising public understanding and awareness of insects.
Buglife is hoping to sign up at least 5,000 supporters in the UK. They will receive regular emails with advice about practical 'small steps' that will help create insect-friendly habitats in the garden and beyond. Supporters are also being mailed a free packet of wildflower seeds donated by a sponsoring company.
