The only county-wide organisation for birdwatchers

For only £1 a month

As a member of the Herts Bird Club you will:

  • receive a free copy of the annual Hertfordshire Bird Report 
    The report contains full details of all species recorded in Hertfordshire in the year plus papers on birds new to the county, recent survey work and many other subjects.

  • be able to attend the annual HBC/BTO Conference 
    Held in February or March each year, in association with the BTO, this provides a forum for discussion on matters of local and national interest in addition to presentations from expert speakers.

  • have the chance to take part in local and national survey work 
    The club runs a programme of survey and monitoring work and all members are welcome to participate, for example the atlas breeding and wintering birds.

  • have access to all meetings of the Herts Natural History Society 
    If your interests extend to other areas of natural history you may attend any of the meetings held by the society covering areas such as mammals, insects, fungi and flora. A supplement of £6 entitles you to a copy of the annual Hertfordshire Naturalist, the Society's journal.

  • support the important work of the Bird Club

To join the Herts Bird Club, please download and print this application form and post it to Linda Smith, Membership Secretary, 24 Mandeville Rise, Welwyn Garden City, Herts AL8 7JU, with a cheque payable to Hertfordshire Natural History Society. 

  • £12 – Individual membership: plus you will receive a copy of The Herts Bird Report
    £18 – Individual membership: plus you will receive copies of both our journals, The Hertfordshire Naturalist and The Herts Bird Report
  • £22 – Family membership: plus you will receive copies of both our journals, The Hertfordshire Naturalist and The Herts Bird Report
  • £18 – Corporate subscription – available to organisations such as companies, local authorities and colleges – carries the same privileges as ordinary member.

Subscriptions fall due on 1 January each year. The first annual subscription of new members joining after 1 October will also cover the following year.

August migration activity increases

For the last week is has been clear that there has been an increase in migration activity of such species such as this Redstart seen near Buntingford by John Dingemans on the 18th of August. This species was also seen at Stevenage on the 18th by Darrel Bryant and another was seen on the 15th at Layston by Chris Beach.

Elusive Polecats

Polecat-
In the last week we have had two reports of polecat road casualties. Or were they Polecat-Ferret hybrids? Polecats were extinct in Hertfordshire until 1980s. Read more about the story of their re-introduction to the county and their current status.
