The highlight of the month was the appearance of a Pectoral Sandpiper at Wilstone reservoir on the 7th; this bird was only present for a few days. This was the first recorded visit to the county for 22 years and there is little doubt that the very low water levels at Wilstone were a significant factor.

The most notable feature of the month was the attractiveness of Wilstone reservoir to waders as a consequence of the exceptionally low water levels, they were similar to this in 1973. There were no exceptionally are bird seen but the variety was excellent and included species such as Grey Plover, Sanderling and Ruff. The records show that Red Kites and Little Egrets are expanding their numbers quite quickly, however it is clear that other species such as Turtle Dove have only a tenuous hold now in Hertfordshire.
