Wow! What a Christmas Count that turned out to be!

The period got off to a strong start on Christmas Day with a Marsh Harrier over Wilstone Reservoir, along with a Great White Egret and a Yellow-legged Gull. And the first of six Firecrest found during the count was at Northchurch.

Things really gathered pace on Boxing Day. At Wilstone Reservoir, a drake Smew was located early in the morning, followed later by

two White-fronted Geese. A further 13 White-fronted Geese were then found at Willow’s Farm, Tyttenhanger, part of the recent influx. Meanwhile, the FERRUGINOUS DUCK (presumed returning bird), first reported this winter on 22 December, was seen again – the first of four Hertfordshire rarities during the period. News then broke of the second, and rarest: five TUNDRA BEAN GEESE at Tring – only the fifth county record and the first since 2011. They remained throughout the period, allowing many observers to connect. Other highlights included the Cattle Egret at Willow’s Farm (present since early December), Jack Snipe at Stanborough Gravel Pit, a Tree Sparrow at Stapleford and Goosander at Cheshunt Gravel Pits. By the end of 26 December, the total had already reached 97 species.

On the 27th, the second-winter Mediterranean Gull at Verulamium Park present on and off since mid-Oct was added, followed by a Black Redstart in Royston. There was another White-fronted Goose at Standon Lodge Farm. The total by end of day three had reached 103.

Sunday 28th added another six species: Mandarin, Little Owl, Marsh Tit, Brambling (the only one of the period), the increasingly scarce Great Black-backed Gull, and the drake Garganey at Coursers Road Gravel Pit, initially found in November associating with Teal, was picked out now approaching full adult plumage.

Monday 29th was probably the quietest day of the count, though Woodcock and a pair of Pintail at Wilstone Reservoir kept things moving, bringing the total to 111 – already two more than 2024, with two days still to go, and just two short of the Hertfordshire Christmas Count record since the event began in 2018.

A record that was soon to fall – and in some style…

First came news of a DARTFORD WARBLER at Tewin. Although this bird had been well watched in late October and November, it had only been reported once previously in December, on the 13th. A briefly seen Shelduck at Startop’s End Reservoir then took the total to 113, equalling the 2018 record. But that didn’t last long. A Bittern was good enough to show late afternoon at Amwell Nature Reserve, and then came news that Dean Cornish had recorded both Brent Geese and Common Scoter flying over Hitchin overnight during nocturnal migration (nocmig). The tally now stood at 116.

But we weren’t finished yet…

Around midday on the 31st news came via the the Herts Birders WhatsApp group that a YELLOW-BROWED WARBLER was present at Verulamium Park, giving excellent views near Ye Olde Fighting Cocks pub. Last winter’s bird returning? Shortly afterwards, two Short-eared Owls were reported at Sandon from earlier that morning and were seen again later in the afternoon – the first confirmed sightings of the season.
