A first summer Purple Heron delighted observers by spending most of the day on the Rye Meads Reserve.

It was first spotted flying over at 8.00am almost simultaneously but separately by Alan Harris and Sarah Harris who were both carrying out survey work in different places on the reserve.

Read the full description and account on the Rye Meads Ringing Group website. The article is very entertainingly written by Alan Harris and Sarah Harris and has full accounts of the bird and the day and has more superb photos by Mike Ilett and Jason Ward.

A Purple Heron was last seen in Hertfordshire on 6th August 1989.
